On Sunday, January 9th, 2011 over 5,000 people took off their pants on subways in 48 cities in 22 countries around the world. In New York, our 10th Annual No Pants Subway Ride had over 3,500 participants, spread out over six meeting points and ten subway lines. Enjoy the video first and then go behind the scenes with our mission report and photos.

The crowd at Foley Square
Like last year we had six meeting points around NYC– two in Manhattan, two in Brooklyn, and two in Queens.

Agent Purnell guides the crowd at the Flushing, Queens location
I ran the downtown Manhattan meeting point along with three other megaphone wielding No Pants “Generals.”

To start things off I asked the crowd who was the oldest and who was the youngest.

At 76, this guy was the oldest participant at our location
For a moment, it seemed like a 3-year-old kid was going to be the youngest, and then this stroller was hilariously lifted up in the middle of the crowd. Moments later shouts from the back of the crowd indicated their was an even younger baby present, 7 months.

Even a dog participated this year!

New Yorkers reacting
The mission started the same way on each of the 100 cars we took over. One person stood up, removed their pants, and exited the train to wait on the platform for the next one. This left lots of nice moments with people by themselves in their underwear.

Nice flask!

Agent Fiedler waits for the train on a chilly above ground platform. It was 32 degrees with 43 MPH gusts of wind.
No Pants continues to become more diverse every year. It’s always cool to see the camaraderie that develops amongst random strangers participating in the same car together.

An MTA employee smiles as the pantless masses pass by, transferring trains
The police were again supportive of No Pants this year. They showed up and escorted us as if we were an official event. Many officers were happy to pose with our participants when asked for photos.

Dancing with the performers known as the Zylofolks
All 10 trains converge on Union Square and the crowd heads above ground.

3,500 pantless people arrive in Union Square
In a new trend this year, many participants had messages displayed on their butts.

The Pro Pants crew was out for the fourth year in a row to preach the gospel of pants. Once again they had a 100% conversion rate!

Despite the bitter cold, more than a few participants took their shirts off as well in Union Square. Hey, wrong prank!

These girls caused more than a few to Look Up More.

No Pants Cab Ride home!
Late into the night pantless people could be spotted all over the city in a variety of bars and restaurants.

  1. Snap!

I should have had someone snap a picture of me getting into a cab to go to Laguardia for my flight home. The cabbie was not going to let me in at first. I walking into the airport with no pants as well but didn’t want to challenge TSA so I put them on while I checked in. The ticketing agent was amused.

  2. Another awesome year. Thanks to IE for putting this all together. Thanks especially to everyone who came out and made this year the biggest yet! And a special thanks to everyone on the N train and all it’s captains who put up with me checking on each group to make sure everyone was coordinated and able to get by on the subway tracks.

Sign up for the mailing list if you haven’t yet, and start inviting friends for next year!

  3. I want to know how many people completed their journey home, via Subway, without their pants. I had to ride the Q all the way to Prospect Park, and a couple at one point started passing around a copy of the Village Voice with an article on the N-PSR in it.

    I feel I made their day. *L*

  4. Is it just me, or did everyone who participated in the no-pants sub-way ride, have beautiful legs? Just an observation.

  5. Gorgeous photography and documentation, but frankly the subject matter was a bore. It’s not abnormal to see exposed legs when you live in L.A. Show me something I don’t know!! (like subway nudity maybe?)

  6. I just love knowing that all you people are out there, causing scenes and enriching the lives of the rest of us. Who says the internet is destroying our cultural diversity?!

  7. it’s unfortunate and imbalanced that more guys are not wearing briefs like the girls. the boxer’s kinda ruin the whole thing. also, the ‘official video’ emphasized girls butts, further exaggerating the divide btwn the sexes (girls as sexy, guys as dull!). this makes the whole thing seem too boringly mainstream, and in a hetero-sexist and hetero-normative way.

  8. it was great fun; yet another awesome way to have fun without pants! hope to make it back here again next year. keep it up guys!

  9. I am a huge fan of your controlled chaos. great job on the no pants train ride this year excellent work. you have to let us know of the next one me and my friends will gladly participate. good job and keep up the chaos.

  10. I don’t understand the motivation to participate in this? Is it because people want to feel that they are a part of something bigger than themselves? Please explain.

    • It’s not rocket science. Improv Everywhere’s theme is to put a smile on people’s face and “We Cause Scenes.” That’s the point for this event.

  11. It’s awesome to see the police have calmed down about a few thousand people on the subway without pants. I’m bummed that pants sellers no longer come through the cars anymore, but I understand there are too many participants for that to be viable. The pro-pants brigade fills that niche. Nice job!

    • Missed the NY and London one again – mighty peeved. The South african Police were not as friendly – they promptly arrested the 300 or so riders on our new Gautrain. Wait for next year!!! We will lawyer up and see how they react then!
      Great Guys!!

  12. No Pants is gettin’ fancy. Garters, tighty whiteys, after-ride no-pants dinners, no pants cabs, not to mention shirts off! 3,500 people is amazing. Remember when the cops were baffled, and Charlie and others hauled away!?
Congrats to the new Improved improv!.

  13. This was too much fun, it was my 2nd year and it was a blast, even better than last year! Can’t wait till 2012 though!
So when will be the next prank Improv?!? Because I’ll definitely be there. ^_^

      • My friends were watching it and I recognized one of your agents so I told them to turn up the volume. So I only caught the end of it. He put it on his “dumbest things of the week list”. The guest helping him, however didn’t think it was dumb at all. She thought it was funny. Bill just thought you were doing it to get onto youtube. Great job by the way.

  14. I was in SF on business and happened to be on the BART train during the No Pants Subway Ride there. People had no clue what was going on. I just smiled and watched the fun!
