Mp3 Experiment Six – Full Details

rooi

Here are the full details for our next mission, The Mp3 Experiment Six. Please take the time to read all of the instructions on this page. This is event is taking place in New York City.

Please note: This is a participatory event. We encourage participants to leave their cameras at home and have fun participating. We request the same from members of the media. Let’s all enjoy the moment and resist the urge to document! Don’t worry, we will have our usual crew taking photos and video for all to see.

Date: Saturday, May 23 (rain or shine)
Location: Roosevelt Island (detailed info below)
Time: The event will begin at exactly 4:00 PM. Arrive early and remember to budget time for weekend subway service delays (detailed subway information below.) The event will be over at 4:47.
Wear: A Red, Blue, Yellow, or Green t-shirt with a white t-shirt underneath. Also recommended: closed-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind running around in and maybe getting a bit dirty.

Full instructions below:

Instructions:
1. Download the Mp3: The Mp3 Experiment Six Download Link [right click and “save as” to download]

Note: The filename for the track is “mp3experimentsix.mp3” and the album, artist, and track name will be “Mp3 Experiment Six.” The track is 47:16 and around 64.9MB.

2. Load the track onto your mp3 player (iPod, etc.)

3. Do not listen to the track.

4. On Saturday, wear a t-shirt that is one of the following colors: Red, Blue, Yellow, or Green. Also wear a white t-shirt underneath your colored shirt (new for ’09!)

5. Bring a watch with a second hand (or use your cell phone if it displays seconds.) Before you leave, sync it up to this atomic clock:

New York

(If your browser doesn’t show the clock above, you can use this link to get the correct time; note that the hour is off, but the minute and seconds are correct.)

7. As 4:00 approaches, take a seat anywhere in the blue-shaded area on the island on the map below. You can sit on the ground, a bench, wherever. Spread out and don’t sit too close to others who look like they might be a part of it.

8. At exactly 4:00:00 PM, press play.

Directions to Roosevelt Island: Roosevelt Island is easily accessible by subway. Take a Queens-bound F train from anywhere in Manhattan or Brooklyn and get off at the Roosevelt Island stop. The station is marked on the map above, at the southwest corner of the starting point area. Unfortunately for Queens residents, Manhattan-bound F trains are not stopping at Roosevelt Island on Saturday. You’ll have to take the E/V/F to West 4th, and then transfer to an uptown F train (see the MTA service advisory.) Roosevelt Island is also accessible by the tram from Manhattan. The tram only runs every 15 minutes and holds a limited number of passengers, so it is probably not the best option unless you plan to arrive very early. Full details on the tram as well as driving directions for those coming by car.

We encourage participants to arrive early. There is a Starbucks, Duane Reade, and a couple of cafes right next to the F station.

Frequently Asked Questions

Say what now?

If you’ve never heard of The Mp3 Experiment, read about it here: The Mp3 Experiments

How will we know when to start?

You will have synchronized your watch or cell phone clock to the atomic clock above. Press play right at 4:00:00 PM.

I can’t find the track on my iPod. Where is it?

The artist and album are both listed as “Mp3 Experiment Six”.

Should I listen to the track beforehand?

No.

Can I listen to the track beforehand?

You really shouldn’t. Sure, there’s nothing we can do to stop you, but to really get the full experience of the event, you shouldn’t listen to it. It will spoil most of the fun. We know it’s hard to resist. Be strong.

What if I get to the event late?

Plan to be early! If you are running late, press play at 4:00 anyway and try to catch up with the group when you arrive.

What if I don’t press play at exactly the right time?

That’s OK. We’re counting on everyone’s tracks being slightly off. Different mp3 players have different response speeds. It will be fun to see participants who are clearly ahead or behind. If you are significantly off, feel free to glance at a neighbor’s iPod and try to sync back up to the correct time.

What if I accidentally hit a button on my player during the experiment that stops the track?

We recommend turning on the “hold” button on your player after pressing play to prevent this from happening. Also, iPhone users should put their phones on “airplane” mode.

What if my player crashes or the batteries die during the experiment?

In the unfortunate event that this happens to you, we recommend you pretend like nothing is wrong and just go with the flow. There’s really no way to fix it, so why not have as much fun as you can anyway?

Can I take photos or video?

Please refrain from taking photos during the experiment. We will have plenty of photographers covering the event, and you’ll have more fun if you’re not taking photos. We take care of the documentation; you take care of the fun!

I’m coming with some friends. Should we all wear the same color t-shirt?

No. It won’t matter. However, if you plan to share one iPod with a friend “one headphone each” style (not recommended) you’ll be better off if you’re wearing the same color.

Can my shirt have writing on it?

Solid colored t-shirts are best, but it doesn’t really matter if there is writing or designs so long as it’s clear what color it is.

Do I have to RSVP?

Nope, but we did create a Facebook Event if you want to RSVP there. Bring as many friends as you like– this event is open to the public.

What if it rains?

Unfortunately we do not have a rain date. It will happen rain or shine at 4:00.

How old do you have to be?

The Mp3 Experiment is appropriate for people of all ages. If you are under 18, you should have your parent’s permission to participate.

Can I bring my dog?

There are green spaces near the starting point that do not allow dogs, but otherwise it should be fine. You’re responsible for your dog’s safety. Keep in mind there will be a massive amount of people.

Can I bring my bike?

Sure. There are bike racks by the F train.

How do we leave the island?

You can take the tram back to Manhattan, or the F train towards Queens to Roosevelt Avenue, where you can transfer to a number of Manhattan-bound trains. Unfortunately you can not catch a Manhattan-bound train at the Roosevelt Island station on Saturday due to service changes.

Don’t you guys have a new book?

We do! A local bookseller will be setting up a mobile bookstore after the event if you want to buy a copy. Charlie and Alex will be on hand to sign copies.

I have another question that hasn’t been answered!

You can ask it by leaving a comment on this entry.

Comments

  1. I’d love to see you guys expand to other countries of the world
    *cough* UK *cough* London *cough*

Ahh, got a bad cold, ye see?

  2. We’re going to be there! We’ve been IE fans for years–this is our first event.

Thanks for planning this, we’ll see you there on Saturday!

  3. Would love to be there also, and would have been my first IE participation. I’ll be in Dalla though. Have fun everyone!

  4. Hmm… I’ve participated for a few years now but this year I’m pregnant… how physically exerting would you say this year’s activities would be since it mentions non closed toe shoes and running around??

    • @Jane,

The activities are comparable to past years. I just felt like we should make it clear in advance this time that there will be a bit of running around and some “off sidewalk” activity that flip flops wouldn’t be ideal for.

  5. please oh please take some ’tilt-shifting’ video of this event. It’d be soooo cool to have everyone look like a model set as we act crazy!

  6. Sarah S: the tram stop in Manhattan is on 2nd Avenue at 59th Street (or 60th Street? well, it’s hard to miss!). On the Roosevelt Island side, the Tram is about 100 yards southeast of the F stop. To get the the blue areas marked on the map, just head north from the tram and you should be dandy!

    Can’t wait for this!

  7. Luckily, I finish finals a couple days before this. Luckily, I’m also planning a trip to NYC the day after. Luckily, I have family in the city I can stay with. Hopefully, I can afford to take the bus ride there on Saturday or invite some friends along. Hopefully, my brothers won’t have too much to do over the weekend and can come along, as we now have MP3 capabilities for each. Hopefully, I’ll see you all there.

  8. *sigh* I love NY, but I live in Pittsburgh (PA). You should deffinitely arrange some missions here!

  9. hey, how about after the experiment we all go into the renrick ruins?? its a smallpox hospital thats been abandoned.

  10. hey wats up anyone wanna meet me there am gonna be on my own and its gonna be my first experiment

  11. For anyone in the Queens West area (LIC, Astoria, Sunnyside, etc) there’s a bridge on Vernon Boulevard and 36th Avenue, walking distance from the 36th Ave N/W, that connects to Roosevelt Island. There’s a walkway across the bridge, and you can also ride your bike. I’ll be biking it from LIC myself on Saturday. Fingers crossed the weather cooperates!

  12. this’ll be my first event.ITS GONNA BE AWESOME!!! this’ll definetely give me the energy I need to make it through the week…hopefully I can get some friends instead of going with my parents.

  13. Could you guys maybe expand, if you get my meaning, i’m like all the way over in australia

  14. To bad! I wish I was in NY. When do you planning on coming to Europa.. Anyways, GOOD LUCK!!!

  15. Would love to be there, but I live too far away. Come to Wichita, Kansas. Please!!!!!!! I love what you are doing!! Keep going!!

  16. “The iPhone built in clock does NOT have seconds. (lame)”

Actually if you go into the World Clock screen, it does have an accurate seconds hand. Its about 4 seconds behind the one on this page. Now the only challenge is finding a way to press play while looking at that clock.

  17. Come to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Immediately.

Also, to respond to Patrick, the iPod Touch lets you double click the home button to bring up music controls over top of the current program.

  18. Planning to be there, I can’t wait! Last year was my first time, excited for the second :D

  19. “Actually if you go into the World Clock screen, it does have an accurate seconds hand. Its about 4 seconds behind the one on this page. Now the only challenge is finding a way to press play while looking at that clock.”

Possibly time the # of seconds it will take for you to switch from the clock to the song. Then maybe you can start going to the song maybe at 3:59:57 or something if you can time it just right.

  20. I forgot to mention: if you plan to use your iPhone, make sure it is on “airplane” mode before starting. Otherwise a phone call could interrupt the mp3.

  21. I would love to participate in a mp3 experiment. But these things always happen when I’m not in the city!

  22. I wish an mp3 experiment would happen somewhere in Alberta. I can’t afford to go anywhere else in Canada at the moment, nevermind the US.

  23. Weather shows a slight chance of rain (personally I have more fun in the rain and you can blame the weather if your clumsy and fall) if it does be sure to take the non patented (as far as I know) Tim approach by putting your iPod into one of those high tech zip lock bags. It works great to a limit (that being jumping into a pool and swimming for an extended period of time but that’s another story). I can’t wait!

  24. Would the instructions (I assume there would be some XD) be clear and easy to follow? I’m not a native English speaker. Would I have problem understanding?

Thanks! Sooo looking forward to it!

    • @non-english speaker,

If you don’t understand something, just copy everyone else. :)

      @Kelly,

Lots of people come alone and most everyone is very friendly.

  25. I’ve been lurking this website for awhile now, wanting to go to an experiment, but my schedule not allowing me to. I’m really excited to make this my first mission! I’ll be going alone, but I’m sure I’ll have just as much fun as I would have with friends.

  26. I’m bringing my girlfriend with me and not telling her about this at all.. just gonna hand her an iPod and have her press play with me. Should be a fun birthday surprise for her. :)

  27. damn, captain. that’s one compliant girlfriend. does she just do whatever you say no questions asked? where do i find one of those? :)

  28. In the faq, I think you should add:
Can I share my mp3player? (left earbud in my ear, right earbud in my partner?)
No, do not do that, you will have to separate at some point. Just get a second mp3player for your partner, they are cheap.

  29. Yea, same here! The dl website seems to be dying… Can anyone provide an alternate link?
    Thanks in advance!

  30. oh no! the mp3 isn’t working for me either? another link would be fantastic! thank you!

  31. if you open several tabs (ctrl-click) then eventually one of them may show up..it’s almost working for me

  32. I seriously recommend that someone who has it, upload it to Megaupload or Rapidshare. When, and IF I get it, I’ll do that for anyone else who cannot get it.

  33. perhaps someone who has already downloaded the file could set up a bittorrent for those who are having trouble with sendspace?

  34. Now I CAN get onto the site but it says the file I’m requesting is unavailable. Sigh.

  35. (If someone could upload it to megaupload, rapidshare, mediafire etc. that would be great.. I believe mediafire may be the easiest.)

  36. I hate to post many times but this is somewhat annoying. Sigh. I wish someone would upload it.

  37. FYI: The link doesn’t work for the file. See below for error message recieved after attempting to downloading the mp3.

    “File Download:

This service is powered by sendspace, the file transfer network.

Sorry, the file you requested is not available”

  38. Anyone have the mp3? The link on this site seems to be broken and I’d like to have the mp3 by tomorrow :)

  39. ***** IF YOU HAVE THE MP3 *****
    ***** IF YOU HAVE THE MP3 *****
    ***** IF YOU HAVE THE MP3 *****
    ***** IF YOU HAVE THE MP3 *****
    ***** IF YOU HAVE THE MP3 *****

Would you mind uploading it to this site:

    http://drop.io/ (it’s very fast)

and then posting the link here?

It would be a big help!! :]

    ***** IF YOU HAVE THE MP3 *****
    ***** IF YOU HAVE THE MP3 *****
    ***** IF YOU HAVE THE MP3 *****
    ***** IF YOU HAVE THE MP3 *****
    ***** IF YOU HAVE THE MP3 *****

  40. I messaged Charlie Todd on Facebook, asking him to check on the file. Hopefully that’ll work… In the meantime, all we can do is wait.

  41. polo or long sleeves are fine, i bet. in previous years, the important thing was that the color show up in aerial views.

  42. Has anyone got the link to work or uploaded the file to another site? It’s not working for me and I’m dying to go!!

  43. sorry for the link problems. I guess sendspace isn’t working tonight for some reason. Tyler is going to put it on drop.io and I’ll edit the page later tonight when I can with a new link. Look for it in the comments first. By the way, long sleeves are fine, but it will be in the mid-70s.

    See y’all tomorrow!

  44. be careful to mouse over and click “download”
don’t just click the file or it will start playing and ruin everything!

  45. The new link is now next to the old link in the post. Just click on it and then hover over the “mp3experimentsix.mp3” file and then chose “download.” As Tyler said, if you just click it, it will start to play in your browser. Spoilers!

  46. @michelle just click the link to the dropio. then there is pretty much a blank screen with a file at the top that says “mp3 experiment 6”
mouse over it, and a bunch of options will appear. click download.

  47. I’m on an iPhone and when I touch the link it gives me the option to download but when I click (tap) “download” it just starts playing. It says “play movie” and plays. Should I pause it and wait for 4:00 tomorrow? Is there a way to save it?
    Me dum.

  48. thanks jay. dropio still seems to work for me. but it’s good to have it other places just in case. if anyone wants to throw up a torrent, that’s cool.

  49. I changed the link to be to Jay’s link above. It should work but be sure to “save as” rather than just click on it. (what is the mac way to right click save as? apple click?)

    Thanks Jay!

Too bad sendspace decided to crash the night before our experiment!

  50. I definitely downloaded the mp3 a day or two ago, but when I tried opening it tonight to put onto my iPod, it didn’t work. It had disappeared from my iTunes as well. I’m downloading it again. Hopefully everything will work out?

  51. Can’t wait! This will be my first Improv event *and* my first time to Roosevelt Island. Looking forward to seeing how all of this works. Cheers, all!

  52. How about a dispersed event sometime – streaming video from the main site and those of us elsewhere can play along?

    • @Sarah,

There may be certain things you can’t do 100%, but we encourage everyone to come out and participate. I’ve seen several Mp3 Experiment participants in wheelchairs over the years.

  53. Well Hot Damn! sounds like a swingin’ time. We all’l be sure to boogie on down! Can’t wait to see y’all. look for us in our speedo jumpsuits.

  54. I’m so excited for today. It’s my first event, but I’ve been following you guys for a couple of years!

  55. Had a great time. My son and I had a blast! I don’t think you folks were expecting this many people… ran out of ‘toys’ at the end! Would love to know the estimated tally of participants!

  56. Had a great time! Weather was perfect. People were crazy fun. So glad I went. Go blue team!

    • Ha! No way…This is Jeanne, I let a friend borrow it that day and she accidentally lost it!

  57. Woo-hoo, Blues! Great time! My first. I encourage anyone who wants a flat-out good time to join us next time. I came alone and had a blast. Thanks, all!

  58. Can’t wait till you guys organize all the footage in a video. >w< This was my first time in an Improv event, and what made it so convinient is that I practically live on the island! And the most amazing thing was coming right to the edge of the island and seeing that rock. The smallpox hospital was also something I haven’t visited yet! The gorgeous view made me remember how lucky I am to be a New Yorker. Thanks guys for taking us out far. But I’ve got a question: Did you have to clear the event with the Roosevelt Island cops in order to allow 300 or so hyped people to enter the edge? And, can I visit the edge in my free time? ( Because I’ve never been able to before…=< )
    Thanks for the awesome time~`

  59. Actually.. the music was perfect! It made for a nice walk to the field…. great job! I had a great time!

  60. omg, this was soooooo fun. the best part BY FAR was just walking to the field. all these random people kept asking my friends and i “where are you going?? whats going on?” & id just be like “…huh? i dont know”

  61. This was by far one of the coolest things I have ever participated in. The music was nice it looked like we all had an awesome time. I am so glad I did it!

  62. Chiyo: Southpoint Park is open until dusk pretty much everyday. While the wide gate is usually closed there is always a door that is open.

  63. Anyone lost a COBY MP3 player black i8n color white a white stripe in the middle. The button area is also white and the buttons are silver and look very much used.It lost its cap at the connection part. I found it by the fence on the Coca Cola side of the grass after the experiment.

  64. @ Mike
So does this mean I can pretty much come there through that little door at the right, closer to the Manhattan side?
    ~`Thank You! Dusk helps.

  65. When are you guys ever gonna come to australia and do something like this. Its so boring here.I wish i lived in america.

  66. English(Inglés):
    ok… good… I think that was very funny !!! =D
Can you do it in Monterrey, Mexico? This is the most industrial country of all Mexico. Lets see Whats happen with latin american people… Dont you want to figure out??
    See you.
