Improv Everywhere agents returned to the subway on Saturday, March 23 to continue their mission of creating happiness in an otherwise dreary locale. Much of what IE does can be summed up in two words: organized fun. The premise for this mission didn’t go much further than that. Our only goal was to get a subway car full of strangers to play bingo together.

Improv Everywhere Mission
Bingo Charlie Calls the game
Agent Arnheiter and Agent Todd played the roles of The Bingo Dudes, Bingo Carl & Bingo Charlie. Both wore a “Bingo Dude” nametag on their shirts. The rest of the agents posed as strangers on the train who willingly played bingo, which would encourage others to do the same. Following tradition, the agents started their mission at the genesis of the 6 Train, the Brooklyn Bridge stop.

Agent Good and Bingo Carl
The Bingo Dudes raced around the car and taped up various bingo-related flyers on the windows and doors. Once the train began to fill, they made their introduction.

Bingo Charlie: What’s up everyone!? We’re the B!
Bingo Carl: I!
Bingo Charlie: N!
Bingo Carl: G!
Bingo Charlie: O!
Both: Dudes!
Bingo Charlie: Bingo!
Bingo Carl: Dudes!
Bingo Charlie: I’m Bingo Charlie
Bingo Carl: And I’m Bingo Carl. Let’s play some bingo!!

Improv Everywhere Mission
2 Away!
Bingo Carl handed out bingo cards and black magic markers while Bingo Charlie got ready to call out the game. The Bingo Dudes worked the crowd with their vast bingo knowledge.

Bingo Charlie: B-12! If you’ve got B-12! Mark it!
Bingo Carl: Hey Bingo Charlie, did you know that B-12 is a complex vitamin!?
Bingo Charlie: G-59! You know 59 is an express stop on this train!
Bingo Carl: All you need is a bingo card and a dream!

Improv Everywhere Mission
Strangers! Subway! Bingo! Fun!
Most strangers played along happily, often competitively.

Agent Szilagyi plays while a stranger looks on.
Others preferred to watch others play rather than playing themselves.

Improv Everywhere Mission
Bingo Charlie & a happy player
Bingo players rushed to get a bingo before their stops arrived.

Bingo Charlie: Let’s see if we can get a winner before Grand Central!! I know lots of you have to get off there, so let’s concetrate and win!
Bingo Carl: Hey Bingo Charlie, I don’t know if you honor requests, but this guy down here really needs B-9!

Agent Good with his bingo prize and new friend.
Many players, both strangers and IE agents, got bingos. Each time a player shouted “Bingo!”, the train errupted into applause, and the player was given his choice of a “fabulous prize.” The fabulous prizes included plastic flutes, police whistles, and troll rings.

Improv Everywhere Mission
Agent DMartin also made a friend
Eventually the Bingo Dudes had given out all 70 of their bingo cards. The duo encouraged players to pair up and play along with a friend. This resulted in complete stangers holding bingo cards and playing together as a team.

Often the most beautiful things are quite simple in their design. This mission was certainly simple, and watching strangers smile together a pull for their square to be called was beautiful enough for us.

Mission Accomplished.

Comments

  1. Undoubtedly, the best part of this mission is when you managed to get strangers on the train to team-up. Just goes to show you that anyone can be a friend as long as you open up!

  2. One of my favorites, despite the fact it’s hardly anything like the rest of the missions. Those pictures are wonderful, andthey made my day.

  3. This goes along with Mobius and Warp in my list of "Missions I’d like to try myself someday."

  4. "2/20/05

Both wore a “Bingo Dude” nametag on their shits.

    Shits?"

^HAHAHAHA!!!!! ahhh…wow. I didnt even notice that and that one typo coment made my day…. Another great mission! Keep it up! ^.^

  5. I love this one because it’s very acessible for all those strangers – it doesn’t feel like there might be a catch. (I used to live in London and some of the beggars are very creative, so you get such a habit of ignoring everybody else)

  6. What you guys do is just incredible. Not only are you talented actors, but you’re able to bring random strangers together as friends/teammates… what you guys do is really a great, great thing!

  7. I love this. It’s really great to see the usual tense, annoyed people on the subway all get together and play Bingo. Really sweet. ^_^

  8. Sounds like the Subway is a great place to mess with peoples’ minds! I live in DC, and I’d love to try something like that over here, but I’m not sure what kind of response I’d get out of people :D
