Yes, it is called football (or “association football”), if you are based in anywhere other than the United States or Canada. In the U.S. or Canada, football is a very different game that is similar to rugby and is usually referred to in countries other than the U.S. or Canada as “American football” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_football). The term “soccer” was a slang abbreviation for “association football” that appeared in England in the 1880’s, and it apparently caught on in the United States, especially since the word “football” was already used more often for American football. Hence, European football = association football = soccer, while American football is similar to rugby football (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_football). Due to the fact that Improv Everywhere is based in the United States (New York City), the term “soccer” is used because calling it football would make people think it was American football.

Personally, I think that football (in the association sense) makes more sense than American football, since you use your feet a lot more in the European version (the only use of feet in the American version to kick the ball is during kickoffs, punts, and field goals). However, I didn’t decide the terminology (since I wasn’t alive in 1880, let alone 1980).
